How to Make an ATS-Friendly Resume in Pakistan

A resume can look tidy on screen and still be awkward for recruitment software to read. Scanned pages, unusual headings and text hidden in graphics can all get in the way. Start with selectable text, familiar section headings and consistent dates.

An applicant tracking system helps employers manage applications. Different employers use it differently, so there is no score that guarantees an interview. Your aim is to make the resume easy to read while keeping it relevant to the vacancy.

Start with readable text

Use a text-based file rather than a photograph or scan of the page. Your name, contact details, job titles, dates and skills should be selectable text. A logo or decorative icon should never be the only way a reader can identify a contact field.

Use conventional headings such as Education, Professional Experience, Projects and Technical Skills. A heading like “My journey” may be readable to a person but is less explicit about what follows.

Keep important information in the body of the document. Greenhouse's resume parsing guidance identifies complex formatting and contact information in headers, footers or text boxes as possible parsing problems. That is evidence about one system, not proof that every two-column CV fails.

A format comparison

Harder to interpretClearer alternative
Skill bars marked four out of fiveNamed tools with examples of use
Employer, role and dates split across unrelated boxesRole, employer and date range together
Contact details only in a page headerContact line in the main content
Entire page saved as an imageSelectable text in the accepted file type

A simple single-column layout is a useful baseline because its reading order is easy to inspect. If you prefer a more complex design, test the exported document instead of assuming its appearance proves compatibility.

Fictional sample section

Software Engineer — Example Digital, Lahore October 2023–present

  • Built a React interface for order review and connected it to documented Node.js endpoints.
  • Added PostgreSQL indexes after reproducing a slow-query issue in staging.
  • Wrote regression tests for booking conflicts and reviewed fixes with the team.

Technical Skills JavaScript, React, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Git and API testing.

This fictional example puts the role, employer and dates together. Its skills appear both as a list and in work evidence. Do not copy tools you have never used; the point is the relationship between a claim and supporting work.

Match keywords honestly

Read the job description and group its requirements into essential skills, responsibilities and helpful extras. If it asks for SQL and you have used PostgreSQL, you can describe both accurately: “SQL queries in PostgreSQL.” If it asks for AWS and you only watched a tutorial, do not imply production cloud experience.

For a bank trainee role, relevant words might come from its actual duties: reconciliation, customer service or Excel. For a software role, use the language and framework names in the vacancy when they match your experience. There is no universal list that should be inserted into every Pakistani resume.

Avoid hidden text, repeated keyword blocks and changing an official job title to one you never held. The tailoring guide shows how to align evidence without manufacturing qualifications.

Test the exported file

  1. Export in the format accepted by the application portal.
  2. Open the file and select a paragraph of text.
  3. Copy the whole document into a plain-text editor.
  4. Check that names, dates and bullets appear in the intended order.
  5. Revisit any section whose text is missing or jumbled.
  6. Check the portal's auto-filled fields before submitting, if it provides a preview.

The copy-and-paste test is a useful first check, not a simulation of every ATS. A portal can still need manual corrections. Inspect your exported document after changing templates or adding a long section.

Interpret checker results carefully

Use a checker to find possible document problems, then look at the relevant text yourself. Missing skills in the report may mean the section was not detected correctly; it does not automatically mean the resume contains no skills.

Our ATS checker walkthrough explains the tool's feedback and distinguishes ATS readiness from matching a particular job. A high formatting score cannot establish your eligibility, work authorisation or suitability for a role.

Final checklist

  • Contact details are readable text.
  • Headings name the section clearly.
  • Job dates and education dates are consistent.
  • Skills are relevant and supported by examples.
  • The file opens correctly and its text reads in order.
  • Any portal fields are checked before submission.

Use the Pakistan CV format guide for section order, or the software engineer guide for technical examples. Create a readable resume and inspect the exported version before applying.

Preview the ClearPath ATS template. Its single-column reading order, conventional headings and text-based skills list match the formatting checks in this guide. Test the exported text; a template alone cannot guarantee an ATS result.
