Should You Include Picture, CNIC, or Marital Status on a Resume in Pakistan?

Should you put your photo on a Pakistani resume? What about your CNIC number or marital status? For a CV you send to several employers, leave these out unless they are specifically requested. Give the space to your qualifications and work instead.

A required application form is a separate matter. If an official form asks for a photograph or identity details, follow its instructions and use the verified submission process. You do not need to add those fields to every copy of your CV.

A practical decision table

DetailGeneral-purpose resumeEmployer or official application form
NameIncludeUse the name required by the records
City and contact detailsInclude a monitored email and phoneComplete the specified fields
PhotographOmit by defaultSupply if explicitly requested
CNIC number or scanKeep off the general CVSupply through the required verified process
Marital statusOmit by defaultAnswer accurately if required
Full street addressCity is usually enough for our recommended layoutProvide the requested address fields
Date of birth, religion or family detailsOmit unless specifically relevant and requestedFollow the particular form's instructions

The table is the starting point we recommend for minimising unnecessary information. It is not a claim that every Pakistani employer follows the same practice or that a field can be ignored when it is mandatory in an application.

Photos: local expectations and international applications

A recruiter may ask for a photograph, and some application processes have a photo upload. Ask whether it is needed in the CV or supplied separately. If requested, use a clear professional photograph and check the specified size and format.

For a general software, business or remote-job version, a photo-free layout gives more space to evidence. Harvard's resume guidance advises against a photo and age or gender details in its US-oriented resume context. That is useful for a US-style application, not a universal description of Pakistani hiring.

A photo alone does not prove that an ATS will reject the document. The relevant checks include whether your main content is selectable text, whether it reads in order and whether the application meets the employer's requirements. See the ATS formatting guide.

CNIC: separate identity verification from professional evidence

A general CV may be forwarded beyond the original recipient. Keeping an identity number out of that reusable document avoids distributing information that does not explain your skills.

If a verified employer or official portal requests CNIC information, supply it through the specified fields or process. Confirm the organisation and destination before sending scans. Do not insert a CNIC scan as a page in a CV merely because a recruiter may need identity documents later.

For a public CV or portfolio, use a professional contact method and your city. Do not publish a CNIC number, passport number or home-address detail to make the page look more complete.

Marital status and other personal fields

For our general job-focused version, marital status does not demonstrate a skill or achievement, so leave it out. The same reasoning applies to unrelated family information. Use the space for recent work, projects, education or certifications.

If a particular application has a required field, answer it accurately. Do not interpret advice about keeping a CV focused as permission to falsify or omit mandatory eligibility information.

For Gulf applications, check what the specific employer requests rather than assuming it needs an old-style personal-details block. The professional KSA/UAE guide explains location and supporting-document distinctions.

FPSC and PPSC applications are not ordinary CV templates

FPSC's official online application instructions include identity information and photograph-upload instructions. Those requirements apply to that application process; they do not establish a requirement for every private-sector resume.

For PPSC or another commission, use its current advertisement and official instructions. Do not assume that an FPSC requirement is automatically identical to a PPSC requirement. Check eligibility, document fields and deadlines directly. A general CV is not a substitute for submitting the required official form.

Two versions of a fictional contact block

Application-specific additional details Provide the requested identity, photograph or address information in the employer's designated form. Keep it separate from the reusable contact block unless the instructions explicitly require it on the CV.

Ayesha is fictional. The point is to maintain a useful base document and add application-specific information through the appropriate process.

Before sharing the document

  • Check whether the vacancy explicitly requests a photo or personal field.
  • Distinguish the CV upload from separate form fields.
  • Verify the recipient before sending identity documents.
  • Keep the reusable CV focused on relevant qualifications.
  • Review the exported file and remove unnecessary identifiers.
  • Follow the requested file type and upload limits.

Use the Pakistan CV format guide for a general layout or create your resume with the details needed for your particular application.

Common questions

Will removing a photo make my CV unprofessional?

A clear, accurate and readable document can be professional without a photo. Add one when the application explicitly asks for it.

Should I include my father's name?

Leave it out of our recommended general-purpose version. Complete it accurately if the particular official application requests it.

Can I keep one version for all employers?

Keep a factual base, then check each vacancy. Different forms and document requirements can require different application versions.

Preview the Direct ATS template. Its stacked contact block and uncluttered single-column layout provide a straightforward base for the contact details and professional evidence recommended here. Leave unnecessary personal information out and follow any explicit application requirements.
