CV vs Resume in Pakistan: Which Should You Send?
A vacancy asks for a CV. Another asks for a resume. Do you need two different documents? For a typical job application in Pakistan, you can often use the same focused account of your experience, education and skills. Check the instructions before changing anything.
An academic CV is a different case. Research, publications and teaching may need much more space than a short job application. Let the purpose of the document decide what goes into it.
Compare the documents by purpose
| Document | Main purpose | Typical content |
|---|---|---|
| Job-application CV or resume | Show relevant qualifications for a vacancy | Experience, education, skills and selected projects |
| Academic CV | Document academic work | Research, publications, teaching, grants and presentations as applicable |
| Prescribed application form | Supply required fields for a process | The sections and supporting documents named by the organisation |
Length follows the purpose. A graduate's job document can often fit one page. An academic CV may need more space because a publication list is part of the evidence. Neither label by itself determines a universal page limit.
Scenario 1: a private-sector role in Pakistan
Suppose a fictional bank advertisement asks for a CV from graduate trainees. Prepare a focused document showing your education, relevant coursework, projects and any internship. Do not add a full academic publication list merely because the advertisement used the word CV.
For a local software-house role, make your technical work and contribution easy to find. A hiring team can assess the project or employment evidence whether you call the file a CV or resume. Use the vacancy's terminology in the filename where practical.
Follow the Pakistan CV format guide for a baseline structure. For graduates, the graduate layout guide puts education and projects in context.
Scenario 2: an academic or research application
Read the department's instructions. It may ask for research interests, thesis details, publications, presentations, teaching, referees or a separate research statement. Use the requested headings and do not invent publications to fill a section.
Keep publication status accurate. A manuscript in preparation is not a published paper. A submitted paper is not an accepted paper. Give the title, author order and status as they actually stand.
If you have no material for a heading and the form does not require it, you can omit the section. A concise, accurate academic record is more useful than an inflated one. If a university supplies a template, that template takes priority over the job-focused layout described here.
Scenario 3: an international vacancy
Check whether the employer requests a resume, CV, portfolio or country-specific form. Use its language and follow the upload rules. For a US-style job resume, our recommended general-purpose version concentrates on qualifications and leaves out a photo and unrelated personal details.
For Gulf roles, do not assume that every recruiter wants the same personal-information block. The Saudi guide and UAE guide explain location and availability wording. Identity and visa documents can be requested separately through an official recruitment process.
What changes when you tailor the document?
The emphasis changes; the facts should not. You can move a relevant project higher, shorten unrelated employment and write a summary that identifies the target role. You cannot change your degree, previous title, dates or citizenship to fit the advertisement.
Here is a fictional example:
- General version: “Business graduate with coursework in accounting and operations.”
- Bank trainee version: “Business graduate with an accounting project comparing ledger entries and documenting reconciliation differences.”
The second version helps the reader connect an actual project to the target role. It does not claim professional banking experience. The tailoring guide provides a longer worked example.
Name and check the file
Use a clear name such as Ayesha-Khan-Graduate-CV.pdf or Ayesha-Khan-Resume.pdf. Avoid filenames containing “final-final” or an unrelated employer's name. Send the file type specified by the vacancy rather than assuming PDF is always accepted.
Open the file after exporting it. Confirm that links, dates and your contact details are correct. If the portal extracts information into fields, review those fields too.
Common questions
Must I create both a CV and a resume for the same job?
Usually you only need the document requested for that application. Maintain a fuller record privately and select relevant material for each vacancy.
Does “CV” mean I must include personal family information?
The label alone does not establish that requirement. Check the application instructions; see the personal-details guide.
Can I use the same content in the builder?
Yes, for a job-focused document. Arrange the sections around the application purpose and create your application resume. For a prescribed academic form, make sure the tool can reproduce the requested structure before using it.
Preview the Career Standard template. Its traditional single-column structure suits the job-focused document discussed here. For an academic CV or prescribed application form, follow the required structure instead.
